Skål!

Chris and I had a really productive weekend in terms of getting the house in shape, a breakthrough weekend, if you will. We got rugs, a TV/media center, a coffee table, a new bed frame, among other things. Of course, this involved renting a 10-foot moving truck and trekking out to the Ikea in Emeryville--not once, but twice. (We originally planned to only have "grown-up" furniture once we bought the condo, but, well, we bought a condo. So.)

To celebrate, I picked up two flavors of pickled herring (mustard and garlic) at Ikea's marketplace today on a whim. When we were vacationing in Barcelona this past July, the Swedish couple we were with, Pär and Lisa, prepared a traditional Swedish mid-summer festival meal: pickled herring, boiled new potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, bread, cheese, and many, many little bottles of aquavit. We were surprised to find that we actually enjoyed the herring, at least the non-traditional flavors. The traditional flavor is...strong, we'll say. Anyway, I replicated that meal tonight, in celebration of all the work we accomplished. Though, Ikea doesn't sell aquavit, so we substituted some vodka we had in the freezer. (And that vodka seems to be kicking in now, so apologies if I get a little loopy.) And I added broccoli to the mix, because it feels weird to eat just fish and potatoes.

Here's Chris and our Swedish-inspired spread:

Closeup on the fish (we added the lingonberry conserves just because I love it so):

Yum! The mustard-flavored herring is my favorite. Big thanks to Pär and Lisa for introducing us to their traditional meal! We'll be on the lookout for aquavit so we can do the meal right.

I'll have more picture soon, as we finish getting the house in order.

LOL!!! I <3 IKEA :) Have you noticed these days they have a wider range of prices / quality? It's actually kind of hard to achieve the starving grad student look now, unless you stick solely to their budget pieces.

When AJ and I moved in together, we ended up going to Ikea TWICE in a day as well. Or was it THREE times? I dunno. I've blocked it all out of my head.

That said, you guys missed NORWAYDAY back in MAY. You could have gotten all the aquavit you wanted there!

I have a scandanavian cook book (KITCHEN OF LIGHT) that I bought because it was pretty, but I have never used it to make anything. We should get together and make a big Scandanavian feast!!!!

Julie, I totally have noticed a wider range in prices/quality at Ikea. Namely when we went to pay for everything, and I was like, "WTF?! Why is so expensive?!" :) I want it both ways, I guess.

Irvin, we totally should make a Scandinavian meal together! There's this show on PBS(?) that features two Scandinavian cooks: one is a Swede named Tina Nordstrom and the other is a Danish man whose name I can't remember. They make yummy looking food.

actually KITCHEN OF LIGHT is based on the PBS show of the same name - though I think it aired back in 2002 or 2003. I never saw it. I just thought it was a pretty cookbook (food porn) back when I was buying pretty cookbooks with no real practicality (ooh...the French Laundry cookbook! oooh...the Boulevard cookbook!).

Let's do a SCANDINAVIAN MEAL! make we could do it in cabin, after a day of skiing....to give it that full snow effect.

because...you know... that what i want to do after a day of skiing. create a huge meal of recipes that I've never tested...

hmmm. i'll have to re-think that.
